Pinyon Cafe is right in the heart of Sugarhouse, serving up a wide menu of coffee drinks and baked goods, as well as some adventurous non-coffee options.
The trailer has been on my Insta radar for quite awhile, the joyful-looking orange trailer and the striped straws in their drinks popping up onto my feed nearly daily.
Waking up to this post featuring the matcha rose latte and a vegan rose donut was the final straw. I knew I had check it out. If you know me, you know I love all things rose. (One of my shameful secrets is that things that taste vaguely like soap really delight me, hence my obsession with rose, lavender, and other floral flavors that feel more suited to a Bath and Body Works product than something you're about to eat.)
As someone whose poor navigation skills rival that of Christopher Columbus, I was worried Pinyon would be difficult for me to track down. Even with the help of Siri, the amount of wrong turns I take during a journey to a new place would astound you. (I'm really laying it all out there in this post - I want to eat soap and I can't drive! Please still follow me) But Pinyon was super easy to spot. It's on Highland Drive right in the Sugarhouse area, with lots of parking nearby.
I ordered an iced rose matcha latte with almond milk and a rose donut, of course. The matcha taste in the drink was earthy and strong, while the accents of rose kept it sweet. It was definitely one of the most flavorful matchas I've had.
I've been trying to cut back on a caffeine a bit - despite my namesake on this website - and matcha is a good replacement for jitter-inducing espresso due to its health benefits and more slow-release caffeine. I would definitely order the rose matcha latte again, and I'm curious to try it hot as fall approaches and we replace our refreshing summer beverages with cozy autumn ones.
But the main star here was the rose donut. Thick and fluffy, with a glaze of white icing and a dash of rose petals, this donut was like no other donut I've tasted before. The floral flavor was truly unique, and the soft texture made it the perfect morning treat. I'm typically a fan of the more dense cake donuts as opposed to the fluffier ones, but this little delight truly made me reverse course on that position, as it beat out any cake donut I've ever had. Pinyon has vegan donuts Thursdays and Fridays, and other varieties of garden-to-table pastries on all other days.
I will definitely be checking out Pinyon again!
