'Crema' of the crop

Crema makes every day feel this sunny and bright.

Is there any combination more classic than coffee and donuts? Just ask stereotypical cops on TV, Homer Simpson, or coffee-and-carb lovers everywhere.

Fortunately, there's a local stop on State Street that provides the best of both. I discovered Crema Coffee & Soda after looking up coffee shops around that area, and I was intrigued by its little white building that's both cute and compact, sleek signage and expansive menu.

Now, I'm definitely a sit-down coffee shop gal. In my opinion, the opportunity to snag a table and camp out for hours with a laptop or good book is part of the experience of cashing in your hard-earned dollars for a beverage rather than making one at home.

But I can't deny the convenience of a drive-thru, and Crema is so good, I'm more than willing to forgo that sit-in experience to snag one of their sweet and creamy lattes. (Crema is also my go-to for grabbing a drink to sneak into the movies, the library, etc., almost rivaling Starbucks as my grab-it-and-go go-to. Phew, say that ten times fast.)

Crema has a lengthy list of flavor options, which, as a latte lover, is major for me, and I've had fun working my way through the list. Hazelnut and vanilla are my classics, and I tried almond the other day and I could not stop gushing to everyone I came into contact with about how amazing it was, so I'll definitely be getting that again next time.

We love an expansive flavor listing.

But the Crema beverage that really deserves the spotlight is the chai. I am PICKY when it comes to chai. I'm so not a fan of spicy chai; I like it sickeningly sweet. I know that's not how true chai is, but what can I say? I'm basic AF. The best chai I've ever had is from Fillmore Coffee in Phoenix, a coffee shop I love so much I would seriously get married there. I nearly teared up with joy when I first sipped the Crema chai because it was the first chai I'd had in months that truly tasted close to the Fillmore one (I'm not dramatic or anything).

So yeah, I'm basically addicted to the chai at Crema. It has a creamy, cinnamon-y taste, and getting it with an espresso shot is just icing on the cake. I like it iced (what else is new?) and in the 24-ounce size.

In other random tidbits, I adore the ice from Crema. You have ice preferences? Yes, I do. Drinks of the iced variety are kept cold with pebble ice rather than the traditional cubed ice. I'm not sure what makes this baby ice more fun than other varieties, but it takes up less space in the cup (more coffee!) and is just one more thing that sets Crema apart from other coffee places. (And in a competitive business atmosphere, anything distinct about your drinks is key.)

You promised donuts? Yes, Crema gets its donuts from Banbury Cross, and they're the best donuts I've ever had in my life. I know I'm partial to hyperbole, but I'm not even exaggerating. Every time I pull up to the window I peek in to see if I catch a glimpse of the cinnamon donut in the case. It's like eating a crumbly, delicious cinnamon roll, but in donut form. (If you want to truly live your best life, dump the extra donut crumbs into the chai and prepare to be dazzled. You're welcome.) You can pre-order the donuts by the dozen, which I think would be fun for a party.

Can't you just taste that crumbly cinnamon goodness? Mmmm.

If you're not into caffeine, Crema Coffee & Soda also has (spoiler alert) soda! I've never been super into soda myself (it's not a nutrition thing, as I've been asked before, the carbonation just makes my delicate little self feel icky), but all the fun varieties and refreshing flavors at Crema certainly have been tempting. They also have smoothies and frappes if you're a lover of all things blended.

So next time you find yourself on State Street, steer your vehicle to Crema. You won't regret it!
