The Downtown SLC coffee shop offers a sleek yet down to-earth aesthetic and quality beverages you'll want to savor.
For as many coffee shops that I hit up almost weekly, there's an equal amount on my "to try" list. Three Pines Coffee in Downtown Salt Lake City has had a firm spot on that list for months, and a few weekends ago I found myself with some time to kill on the very street it's located. Those geometric white branches on the window beckon to me every time I'm passing by on TRAX, and I was so excited to finally check out this shop that's been on my radar probably longer than any other coffee establishment. So without further ado, here's three things I like about Three Pines.
1. The aesthetic
Three Pines is sleek yet down-to-earth, decked in black and beige and wood and that adorable tree logo. It reminds me of an urban ski lodge, the kind of place where you'd stop for a steaming cappuccino after a long day of hitting the slopes (or like, hitting the shops at City Creek). The cozy yet minimalistic interior is a breath of fresh air on a busy city street, and the vibe is super fitting for outdoorsy Salt Lake City. And come on, isn't that light-up "COFFEE" sign the most Instagrammable thing you've ever seen?
2. The matcha
It seems like matcha is becoming more mainstream, but in my experience it can still be hard to come by. I had already had a coffee on the morning I popped into Three Pines, and I wasn't physically or spiritually ready for more espresso, so it was the perfect time to try out the green-tea goodness at Three Pines. (Matcha has caffeine, more than other teas, but less than jitter-inducing coffee and causes less of a "crash"). I was NOT disappointed. It was creamy and sweet, my favorite way to have matcha. I absolutely adored how foamy it was, considering how foam is often absent from iced drinks. But look! It looks like it's wearing a hat! It also had vanilla in it, which was a delicious touch. This was one of my favorite iced matchas I've had. But I'm curious to try out a latte or cappuccino next time I hit up Three Pines since I opted for something different this time.
3. The view
Three Pines is located on Main Street in Downtown Salt Lake City, which is bustling with tons of popular sites. The train whizzes by to deliver concertgoers to the arena or drop tourists off at the statuesque Temple Square, while businesspeople hustle on their lunch breaks or shoppers stroll down the street with shopping bags. You really see it all, and the large windows at Three Pines offer a relaxing view for your coffee break. The shop is pretty small inside, and there's a few tables against the right wall, but the counter at the window is definitely the prime spot.
Overall, Three Pines is a place for quality beverages and definitely worth stopping at if you're in Downtown SLC (or near TRAX - the Gallivan Center stop will practically take you right there). I wouldn't necessarily camp out there with my laptop or a book (although you certainly could); in my view it's more of a place to stop during a day downtown to catch your breath and truly enjoy your beverage.
The menu is pretty simplified, so if you're looking for a gargantuan cup of sugary fuel this might not be the stop for you (iced sizes go up to 16 oz). It should also be noted that Three Pines has oat milk, which isn't quite a staple at all coffee shops yet, and is definitely a plus in my book. Three cheers for Three Pines!
